Dose Behind Spray-Paint Scandal

tabloidcrap.jpgA former editor at the National Post once made the argument that society should stop funding public libraries because it impedes the retail sale of books. Some years later, that right-of-right attitude has trickled down to the Post’s impressionable little sister, Dose. For their recent publicity event, Dose sponsored promoters to spray-paint the word “TABLOID” all over the city, including on the side of public libraries! Small business owners were also vandalized, as well as private residences and at least one navy blue wall (pictured).
For around a week, it was unclear what the TABLOID tags were supposed to signify, or who was calling the shots on this was ‘let’s deface public property’ operation. As it turned out, the vandalism was promotion for an inconsequential CanWest/Dose event – a “hip” looking glam-rock DJ night on October 26 at the Social. And five days after the event, the grafitti remains.
Aside from the use of a few pejorative adjectives, all of the above is fairly factual. So now, enter the editorial: Dose is a criminal organization. Since it only hires “young, enthusiastic” employees, and that the spray-painting was widespread along predominantly youth-inhabited areas, it would be hard to believe nobody at the daily knew this grafittiing was taking place. Thus, as Dose was funding, and should’ve been well aware of, this heinous activity, the paper is responsible for damages.
This line of thought mirrors the argument that Jean Chretien is responsible for the misuse of public funds in the sponsorship scandal. The Prime Minister supposedly oversaw all government monies spent, just as Dose has a department to look over all promotional monies spent. As TABLOID was a Dose-sponsored event, with promotional money coming from the paper, we must hold Dose responsible for defacing our public institutions and local businesses in similar fashion. Just as the Liberal Party is paying back misused funds from AdScam, Dose should be forced to re-emburse the city and the businesses affected. Dose of its own medicine? Dose that make sense? Or Dose anyone care? Ujjal Dose-anjh? Dose-actly.

    how extensive is this sponsorship anyway? dose told us they would sponsor something of ours (read: put their logo on our fliers) if we gave out a couple of their stickers.
    i don’t understand why this couldn’t have been the work of the bar itself, or the promoter of the event (who wasn’t actually dose)
    i dig the “dose is young and hip” logic but dose’s headquarters is at don mills and their journalists aren’t even that young.
    i don’t think i can believe this yet.

    The Prime Minister SUPPOSEDLY (?)oversaw the theft of our tax dollars. They created and ran the program, then benefitted from it. Now if Dose payed people to spray paint then they are responsible, but you seem to be idicting them without verification. Are you as critical as all grafitti artists?

    also that picture is fucking pathetic… that wasn’t the real thing we spray painted.. ours was a stencil. and it’s a picture from the boards surrounding a burnt down church. that fucking black board used to be covered with shit and they’re just advertising for more rediculously priced condos in little italy. once again we are NOT dose promoters… I have little to do with DOSE… they did not pay for our promotions. I worked my ASS off promoting this fucking night and it was a fucking incredible night. the other girl that works with me won a contest off dose… THAT IS IT.

    three points:
    a) doesn’t matter the degree to which dose sponsored the event. as a responsible corporation, they should’ve set out clear rules as to how the dj night would work ie. tell tabloid promoters not to deface property. in the future, they should be weary of which events they affix their logo to.
    b) the dj night is not the issue here either. nor is how hard anyone worked on the night, nor is other forms/instances of graffiti. the issue here is that the word “TABLOID” was spray-painted on my local library (public space, anyone?). there are lots of dj nights in the city, none of which use this sort of marketing. what gives these people the right to spray-paint promotional messages all over my neighbourhood? this is the crux of the post. great that alana and her buddies are paying for their mistake. that’s all i ask.

    The Beer Store on Dundas West around Dovercourt had just completed renovations, including two large black pillars right at the front of the store. About one day after the scaffolding came down, someone spraypainted “TABLOID” in large white letters on the front of both of the two pillars.
    It stayed up for several days until the Beer Store painted over it. I’m sure they really appreciated having their store defaced 24 hours after the renovations were completed.

    i’ve got nothing against dose. i just like the idea of responsibility within advertising. since dose promoted the event (ad space in newspapers are not free), they have a responsibility to assure they are not promoting anything illegal. i don’t think i have to tell you there are lots of illegal ads in the city, and each time i believe the sponsors should accept the repercussions.
    makes perfect sense to me…but then that’s why i wrote what i wrote.

    … it’s also illegal (or at least morally bankrupt) to actively peddle a paper to children that contains pornographic content, under the guise of being edgeee, something which Dose is guilty of. And really deserve to be called on it.
    Maybe your associates in Don Mills could benefit from some perspective on that? Would be a bit more interesting than this roundabout display of showing that you’re not “down” with “The” “Man”.

    The 1,000 regular visitors you have here are worth more than the 10,000 (?) in Toronto glancing at Dose as an alternative to reading the back of their bus transfers. But there are several things more deserving of a proper thrasing in the way you’ve attempted with this post. Don’t wimp out.
    As for Antonia, she has never actually written to any substantive degree about Dose–which should tell you how (ir)relevant it has been on her side of the fence.

    Is the relation implied between Dose and this particular night overstated? Does that mean when a promoter – or nightclub – spraypaints the sidewalk in ‘Clubland’ (Happens every year) do we call for an assessment of the sponsorship of Molsons? Or Bacardi?
    I think Dose gets a pass on this one. If you want to point out the shortcomings of that paper just point to the ridiculous writing found inside its pages.

    If you really think the anarchy of the internet absolves CanWest from any responsibility in what they put in suburban streetcorner boxes while specifically targeting a pre-teen audience, then maybe you’re not old enough to comprehend …
    Dose’s social responsibility, or lack thereof, has weighed on Josh’s brain lately more than mine. So, why not follow up, and make a statement in the process? He knows how to contact them. Or, someone who has no personal ties to the company can read this and follow through instead. But, in light of his rantings here, I’d like to read Josh’s take either way.

    there’s no wimping here…the leather pants joke was a joke. i think you know i don’t have any pull/association with canwest, at least not to the degree where i can reformat their national papers. though i wish i could. the people with the authority and platform to thrash dose are ones with media columns in widely-read newspapers. so take your dose gripes to her if you feel so incensed.
    and i never raised the issue of sidewalk spray-painting. it’s probably calls for a legit assessment, but that’s not my concern at the moment. my very clearly stated problem was with the my local library, and the promotional spray-painting thereof. since, as a taxpayer, i pay for the upkeep of said library, it is of ultimate relevance to me (and maybe other taxpayers?).
    sure there are lots of issues with dose, torontoist, the post, leather pants and spelling, but here we’re drawing a line in the sand: don’t endorse, financially or otherwise, library vandalism. and at the very least clean it up after your event.

    It’s the same sensibility that produces this vandalism, but the content of the paper is a more significant issue.

    Why did you spray paint a library. I mean c’mon, I was under the impression that there was some kind of code among graffiti artists not to tag/spray certain buildings (daycares, people’s houses, etc.) Queen Street shops might be able to accept it and deal with it but libraries.
    If the graff community doesn’t draw the line somewhere (no tagging on war memorials, tombstones, public buildings) then someone else might draw that line for you and it won’t be so kind.
    Also, damn you Josh. I think you beat my record of comments! I’m going to have bring Antonia Zerbesias into my next post…. somehow.

    My point is that you can’t put the genie back into the bottle and you can’t get nostalgic and say things were better back then. Our society is definetly less polite and more debased. Young people today see a lot more violence/porn/drug use than they did even ten years ago. Dose is just a crass extension of an overwhelming trend.
    I think it is artificial to point a finger at Dose for the so called porn in their paper, whilst your own blog headlines and highlighted phrases include ‘Sex and the Sleepy’, ‘From Strippers to Students’, and the ever popular Paris Hilton porn reference ‘One Night in Perez’, ‘Pornoween’, ‘res erection’ each complete with titalating – albeit not pornographic – images and salicious prose.
    To be sure your site is not aimed or marketed at youth, but there is precious little that stands in the way of them accessing it.

    1) Josh believes that Dose has moral/legal responsibility for all activities of every event to which it lends any sort of sponsorship. The chain of command, from National Post editors, to Dose promotional/adverstising staff, to local DJ’s, can take years to function, but is still powerful. It is not that he has anything against Dose. He just thinks it is an impressionable criminal organization that opposes public libraries and funds vandalism.

    No, I think I’m on the right side of the line–as if you need any more verification that I’m the furthest thing from a genie-back-in-the-bottle type. There is nothing on my site that would hold the attention of pre-pubescent kids. Just like there are tonnes of smutty books inside the library that belong on those shelves.
    Lots and lots of terminology and images on Dose that I would never use in my current site, especially during their recent “Porn Week”. Furthermore, the only reason they use it, along with the 5th grade writing style, is to draw eyeballs to equally crass advertising for ringtones, etc.
    When I’m dealing with kids of the age that are on the lower end of the demographic scale Dose is clearly targeting–and reaching via their distribution platform–I don’t discuss these topics with them–let alone be the one *raising* the topics–and I can only presume Noah Godfrey and his gang wouldn’t either. (This stuff was in the furthest reaches of my mind of late, but Josh’s post dragged it out of me.)

    Unfortunately, I have had no real experience of you as a writer or personality until about three hours ago, so I don’t know what side of the line you stand.
    (Actually – this is funny – I thought you were Matt Blackett, the dude with the subway pins and the strip in eye, and writes for that quarterly Toronto mag, spacing? Spaces?)
    How old were you when you started looking at the back pages of Now Magazine or Eye? I know that I would search out these things as soon as I heard of them.
    My basic objection is that we can’t tell kids that things don’t exist or aren’t prevalent when there is evidence to the contrary all around them.
    They see right through it.
    We can’t pretend that we didn’t go searching for the things that we weren’t supposed to at their age and all Dose does is capitalize on that.
    And calling out Noah Godfrey for crass commercialism won’t get anyone anywhere. You might as well call water wet.

    Look, it’s all about context. They’re trying to capitalize on a sensibility that’s flourished on blogs, right? But dumb it down and get it to children. If there’s an xxx-esque thing on Gawker or Boing Boing or Torontoist or Paved (and any topics or puns I deal in are no more raunchy than Maclean’s these days–and the posts you alluded to are clearly mocking that sexploitative mindset) it’s entirely different from having it in a free newspaper in boxes outside a school and putting that sensibility front and centre.
    Indeed, I’m well acquainted with the ridiculousness of Young Mr. Godfrey’s role, and the lip service he was paying to “user generated content” when they started Dose was beyond laughable.
    Since this discussion has actually motivated me to count the ads in the paper–whose survival I am contributing to by picking it up–I wonder if it will last into 2006.
    (My passive-aggressiveness toward Josh is based in my opinion that he’s doing a better job at what he’s doing with $0.00 than Dose has … in case anyone is keeping score.)

    I think because Dose’s Toronto offices are in the same building as the National Post, there’s a bit of a misunderstanding as to how they are related. They are both part of the CanWest Mediaworks Publications, which includes 11 dailies across the country, Dose, Metro in Vancouver and Ottawa, free weeklies in B.C. like the Langley Advance, and “shoppers” like the Toronto’s Real Estate News and Buyers Guide. The Post and Dose don’t have any staff in common and are more cousins than big and little sisters.
    All of which is to say that connecting something a National Post editor who is not even at the paper anymore said (and said before Dose even existed) with Dose is a little disingenuous.
    Perhaps more disingenuous is saying that Dose is behind this graffiti, which it isn’t, instead of noting that Dose sponsored the event that was promoted in this unappealing fashion. Calling “Tabloid” a CanWest/Dose event is about as accurate as calling the Toronto International Film Festival a CTV/Globe and Mail event, because they sponsor it.
    Sponsors should not be unaccountable for what they sponsor, but I’m willing to bet that no one at Dose even knew about the “Tabloid” graffiti… If you want to criticise Dose, do so. If you want to criticise Dose for sponsoring this event, do so. But this is silly.

    a) the anti-library ideas were said very recently, and it was the abstract idea that is of interest. not the editor.
    b) i just saw the godfrey kid on the back page of the post. cousins with benefits? besides, this relationship isn’t what we’re talking about here and thus is of no interest to me. it’s about anti-libraryism.
    c) if the filmfest screened a hate film, or even a porno, you’d better believe some fingers would be pointed in the sponsors direction. and rightfully so.
    d) and finally, save your bets for the casino my friend. dose is in these areas constantly…that dandy warhols event was half a block from the library in question.

    b) Yeah, it’s of no interest to you. That’s why you keep tarring Dose with the old National Post brush like you did in this post.
    c) Uh, yes. But if they pointed all the fingers at the Globe and Mail, I’d suspect they had a vendetta against the Globe and Mail. And if they called the film fest “a CTV/Globe and Mail event”, they’d be wrong. Like you are.
    I didn’t say you shouldn’t criticize Dose about this, just that it is a mite ridiculous for you to not criticise “Tabloid”‘s promoters and the organizers first and fellow sponsor/host The Social in equal amounts.

    you don’t want an event that canwest/dose created, organized, promoted, sponsored and attended to be referred to as a canwest/dose event? is this your issue? if so, you clearly don’t share my respect for libraries. let me remind you, the library predated the printing-press, and thus newspapers as we know them today. and i know for a fact that both the post and dose have something akin to a library within their offices. libraries are a valued institution not only within canada, but throughout the world.
    the un-named editor left the post, and some years later, it would appear (there’s no way of knowing for sure) that this editors attitudes have manifested themselves on the floor below.
    if you scroll up, or even check the links that i have provided, you will see that the promoters have taken some of the responsibility. and venues have rarely have anything to do with promotion, thus absolving the social. so…who’s left? dose! and, as i’ve stated before, i have nothing against dose beyond this blatant disregard for my public library. not so silly afterall..is it?

    I am not sure what the exercise of counting the ads in Dose will accomplish. If you are looking for weight to your arguement that they are using sexualized references to attract pre-teens then, OK, you are right.
    So What?
    True, it isn’t pretty or taking up any sort of moral high ground but, So what?
    I think it is embarassing that Dose is what passes for cutting edge in Toronto. I don’t think it does and I think that the pre-teen audience you say they want to sway are smarter than that.
    Dose may make it in the sticks ( i.e. the rest of Canada except Montreal and Toronto) but I don’t think this city will embrace it beyond something a bit more interesting than – as you say the back of a transfer.

    FOR THE LAST TIME… we (I) am not a DOSE PROMOTER. I am an indepenant DJ that used the oppertunity to battle against fakers like the mod club and other big rediculous clubs by taking the oppertunity with a DOSE ad given to us because (coincidently) my fellow DJ and rroommate won her equiptment from them. I ‘m sorry about the library too that was just plain stupid. I hope I’ve cleared up somethings. finally. and if you havn’t noticed the spray painting thing is very tongue – in-cheek it was only supposed to stay on the sidewalks but, alas, we got carried away. just come out once and let me prove that tabloid are worth all of this hoopla.

    i have nothing against mod club. i go quite often… i meant that the size and the crowd makes it difficult for an indie club to compete with them. “fakers” was the WRONG word. definately. and of course this is purely my opinion not necessarily the opinion of the other two djs. once again i don’t think that the mod club is “fakers” … i don’t even remember writing that until my fellow dj called to yell at me. whatever….

    So i won the dj equipment, i really am completely amazed that there has been so much talk about all this really. we’re literally 3 poor torontoians, who, probably like a lot of people in toronto are getting bored of some of the nights, so we figured hey? why dont we do something. the spraypaint was just a gimmick, it wasnt supposed to be taken seriously but a lot of people have blown this way out of proportion. anyone remember the val kilmer graffiti? or just really random bad graffiti? i mean come on, we have way bigger problems to worry about than some red letters ona sidewalk. now, ive already taken responsibilty for a few places and have fixed it, brian: i will pay you you’re $20 and probably buy a couple records. i’ll stop in this week, or email me and let me know when you’re in so i can perosnally talk to you. we didnt mean to be assholes at all, i mean look at the outside of rotate this, its not some chic frou frou restaurant right? – and i like it that way. a lot of kids come in and we thought itd be a neat and somewhat original way of getting people interested in the night.
    and with dose, they have nothing to do with it. they just wanted to help us out cause
    a they gave me technics 1200′s (!) and wanted to just advertise themselves about how great they are (which they are dont get me wrong)
