At Carousel Bakery, All the World’s A Merry-Go-Round

With a jonesin’ for some foie gras, Torontoist headed out to the St. Lawrence Market in search of the delectable treat. Unfortunately, our trusted supplier did not have any whole fatty liver, so we settled for a foie gras pate instead, setting us back 30 bones.

While looking for a nibble, we stumbled upon the famous Carousel Bakery location, which offers up their famous peameal bacon sandwiches on a Kaiser bun for about…$5 (if not less).

Peameal bacon on a bun – so quintessentially ‘Canadian’ you just can’t pass it up. Apparently, Carousel enjoys having various celebrities sign their headshots so they can bank on A-list talent such as Catherine Zeta-Jones (whose breasts, according to one Conan O’Brien joke of yore, ”smell like Polident” because, well, she married Methuselah), and some other people who TOist has since forgotten about…

Anyway, the sandwich in question is hefty (unlike the pitiful ones we got at the Royal Winter Fair last weekend) and gives you a large portion of sizzling, juicy pork. Yum! Various condiments are included at the side stand, including some very hot mustard. This toothsome sandwich is loaded with oodles of hot and fresh pork, on a giant sourdough kaiser. Believe us, you won’t go wrong with this Canadian classic. We also hear the other special sandwiches are great (arctic char, and others), but we haven’t yet tried.
