The Typography Fixer

051017_fixer_schoolsign_250.jpg The Star’s Fixer column turns its attention to the crumbling signage at Palmerston School today. We’ve walked by the school numerous times and always sort of liked the abstract jumble of letters. Besides it’s what’s inside the school that counts, and our teacher friend tells us Palmerston has some of the best extracurricular programs in the city, and even has an artist-in-residence. But the Star decries a lack of funding for maintenance, and says the sign has become a neighborhood joke and that “it lends an air of apathy and neglect to an institution where people expect certain standards, like good spelling and grammar.” We think that’s a bit much. If students learned their grammar from the spelling on signage in this town then we’d be in a heap of trouble. So we’ll stop picking on Palmerson Avene Pblc Schol. And the middle letters are disposable anyways.

I see we have Gotha– sorry, Torontoist’s usual acumen on display here. Linking to Toronto Star articles does not a Weblog make, though it produces handy filler. More relevantly, the bullshit about sentences being understandable without constituent letters is a hoax that has been debunked widely.
LAi– that is, Torontoist is in no position even to use the word “typography,” let alone talk about it. Unless you want to look like ignoramuses, as appears to be the intent.

the nasty little man is back again. pls. go write your usual idiocies elsewhere, and leave the typography and filler to us. ignoramus seems like a mighty big word for you too – you must be working overtime on your vocab.

Ah, it’s ok TOist. When Joe Clark starts attacking your blog, it means you’ve made it to the big time! This calls for a beer! Keep up the good work.

At my high school (Leaside) one of the grad pranks when I was younger involved removing letters from the school’s very public front sign.
So anyone travelling down Eglington got to learn: LSD HIGH COOL.
Ha ha, the teachers even admitted it was the most clever prank they had ever seen.

Back in the day in rural eastern Ontario, the usual tactic was just to remove the L from PUBLIC, leaving a PUB IC SCHOOL. Easy and crass!

I tend to fight for disability rights, as the record shows, with significant additional attention paid to my fellow inverts. I don’t know what “men’s rights” are– something heterosexualist divorcés are concerned with? Perhaps I missed a memo.

Oh, and, Sarah, you’re clearly handling the “filler” part of Chica– Torontoist quite well, as you admit. I would trust you to talk about typography the way I’d trust a student at Palmerston Ave. Public School behind the wheel of a Hummer.
