Jobs Scandal: What Not To Wear

coburn_son.jpgHorrible. Shocking. Cronyism. Unappealing. What’s with the outfit on Pam Coburn’s son? What exactly was he wearing during her press conference yesterday? Moreover, what was he thinking?
The story of Pam Coburn has raised a few eyebrows in the media, but no eyebrows rose quite as high as ours when we saw 16-year-old Jake Coburn in his greasy, club-goers leisure suit all over the pages of our newspapers. And a bottle of water? Was this guy at Money Niteclub the night previous? Or was it Mad Bar? Kabin? System Soundbar? Did he pull out that suit specifically for this day? Did his mother approve? Did David Miller have an opinion? What motivates such Night at the Roxbury-like attire? Was it Night at the Roxbury? And most importantly, why was the kid there in the first place?
coburn_kid2.jpg We don’t mean to mimic the kind of gawkish, lame-o, opportunistic, “look at what that guy is wearing” humour of Vice Magazine, but really. A large-collared leisure suit? Aside from the humour of seeing a 16-year-old in such an outfit, the presence of children at this event really should be raising eye brows. Around the age of 16, a young man like Jake is going through an awkward stage in life; a stage no doubt awkwardified by his mother’s public love affair and cronyism scandal. Jake and his suit did NOT need the kind of exposure he received yesterday. Sadly for him, our eyebrows remain raised as a result. (A leisure suit!)

    Why would you write this and nonetheless create a whole post to give him the type of exposure you think he doesn’t need. Who the fuck cares about what he was wearing – this post is mean spirited and petty.

    Whoa! Wait a minute, the BEST blogs (gawker, defamer) are mean-spirited and petty — that’s what makes them entertaining. Don’t be such an Oat Globe, man. If you want lukewarm pfaff you should read the Star. I want to see more items like that one

    what we have here is an elephant in the room scenerio. i’m 1000 per cent sure i wasn’t the only person to point out the 16-year old in a sleazy leisure suit on the front page of the toronto star. in fact, christie blatchford wrote a similar peice in the globe and mail (not about the suit per se, but she got the gist).
    besides, timothy, the star is the most read paper in the country. the damage has been done to poor little jake; i’m just articulating what lots of other people felt about the suit. and further on that point, the “type of exposure” of which i referred was not on a blog, it was in the star. i didn’t take that photo, nor did i drag that poor kid to my press conference. i just commented on an unfortunate situation.

    Leave the kid alone. He’s a victim of his manipulative mother. She probably gave him the damn suit in the first place.

    Hate to rain on your parade, but I thought this entry was priceless. Kid looks like a Gino Empry nocturnal emission come to life. Josh nailed this one.

    OG, why you gotta hate? First off, I think we’re actually on the same page about our little fashionista friend above. For the record, I am FOR a sense of humor about these things: me likey funny. And secondly, while we must continue to make fun of ourselves, we must also continue to support this city’s attempts to come alive — however much they make us want to avert our gaze (knitting in public.) Where is the love?
