Design Your Own Subway Party

subway_party.jpgnewmindspace have a knack for organizing heavily attended, wildly fun events around the city. Using their accumulated knowledge from throwing subway parties on both NYC’s MTA and Toronto’s TTC, they have created an online guide. Through first hand experience, the guide covers how to make it fun, logistics, what to watch out for, and goes into the pros and cons of a morning rush hour commute party versus a midnight empty car takeover. newmindspace have been so successful in New York that, for one subway party, workers dug up old NYC Subway signs and posted them around the station.
Rumour has it the next subway party on the TTC will be in December. Parties are announced on short notice, so sign up to the newmindspace mailing list to be the first to know, or stay tuned to Torontoist to be the second to know.
Most likely due to the success of the subway parties, the TTC reports a 3% increase in ridership over last year.

“Most likely due to the success of the subway parties, the TTC reports a 3% increase in ridership over last year.”
Please tell me you’re being facetious. Please.

Asswipes! In the morning I just want to drink my coffee, read my paper and take a quiet ride down to work. In the evening I just want to slog home in peace and quiet after a hard day at work. I don’t need yahoo’s making either trip an annoying experience. There’s a time and place for everything and a party on the subway is neither. It’s such rudeness to presume that everyone wants to be subjected to “melting down the barriers between us” on the subway. (For the record I’m a young thirysomething that enjoys a good party…)

  • Oat Globe

The problem is that the people who organize these trite love bombs probably don’t hold down jobs. Thus, they will never understand your plight, lister.

Sean, you rock! Thanks so much :D
David Lister sent us an angry e-mail connecting our subway party to the one shown on Zed.ca, not realizing that the latter occurred years before I even lived in Canada. newmindspace does not generally throw rush hour subway parties because of humorless people like Mr. 905 up there. Our parties occur late at night to avoid disturbing commuters.
That aside, we hope to see you at our next late night subway party! :)

It looks as though the majority of subway party participants are 17 years old and cranked up on PLUR.
Id rather stay home and eat pickles straight from the jar.

  • Oat Globe

    “Mr. 905″?
Ugh. Stop equating the suburbs with banality. This apex of urbanism we have here, Torontoist, is one big unending loop of banality.
So the guy doesn’t want a bunch of fruity ne’er-do-wells yelling in his fucking ear commute. That makes him a crank? Please. Some people like to ease in to their workday. Understand that.

  • Oat Globe

    “fucking ear commute”.
I meant “fucking ear DURING HIS commute.”
By the way, Fucking Ear Commute will be playing at Kathedral this Sunday if anyone’s interested.

  • lister

I sent a note off to them appologizing for the misunderstanding on the video (their non-involvement with it), the time their parties happen and to some extent the tone but I still don’t think the subway is an appropriate venue for that.
Also I’m not humourless (if you notice the moniker used) and I don’t live in the 905 area code. I live and work in Toronto on the subway line.

  • Fen

    Party on, Bracken.

the demography is actually very interesting, especially from a sociological perspective.
in new york, attendees seem to be in their mid-20′s and of the “hipster” variety.
while there are plenty of hipsters at toronto subway parties, some younger ravers seem to make their way as well.

What’s happening to this city? Its fast becoming a slightly less important Steven Cojocaru.

  • http://brokenengine.blogspot.com brokenengine

Oat Globe comes off as an intelligent sarcastic curmudgeon = my new best friend. Just wanted to say…

Also, is it just me or is the people that are the most likely to say things like “PLUR” that are the least likely to exhibit it? My ex gf used to say it all the time, and well, she’s my EX now…

  • http://www.newmindspace.com kevin bracken

Toronto’s long-awaited love affair with itself becomes more complex with every moon.
    I love this city :)

  • lister

Not knowing who Steven Cojocaru is/was curiousity got the better of me and I did some googling. It’s *THAT* guy! I’ve seen him several times on TV usually at some entertainment thing where he’s critizing what people are wearing. I briefly laugh at how pathetic he is and change the channel. Plus he’s Canadian?!?! I thought we only had to apologize for Celine Dion but now we have to bump that up by one. Geez…

  • The Real OG

Oat Globe sounds like a fairly typical cynic who dislikes everything. Can he at least admit he likes Torontoist? He comments every damn day.

  • http://brokenengine.blogspot.com brokenengine

Sometimes we criticize most the things we love, in order to make it better.

  • Oat Globe

    OG -
I love way more than I hate. And I love Toronto more than anything. That said, it would be near impossible for me not to take an interest in a blog that so poorly represents this great city.
And really, what are the things I’ve railed against on this site? Pape Ceo’s having the best pizza? A knit-a-thon? Random PLUR breakouts on the TTC? Am I seriously a cynic for not warming to this pap?

  • Josh

i value oat globe as a torontoist commentor, though i disagree on nearly every issue he brings forth. i mean, i would hate it if everyone agreed with us or loved us. that said, there are a-holes out there who just don’t give up. that gets pretty tiresome.
as far as representing the city, i’ll never ever be able to do that, no matter how many comments oat globe leaves. it’s impossible, and certainly not the aim of this site.

kevin – i think what you folks are doing is amazing, and it’s great to see you spread your wisdom.
oat globe – i think you should be a torontoist poster (and i’m not being facetious, though yeah, earlier i was).
thoughts on morning subway parties – i’m sure the video was shot with a bias, but for most, it was likely their best morning commute of the year. for those who haven’t seen the video, here’s the link: http://zed.cbc.ca/go?POS=7&CONTENT_ID=86308&c=contentPage&FILTER_KEY=_categoryContent__7900

OG! You actually made me smile, bro. Your “correction” was funny. Best,
    Hector

I read comments from people like “lister” and I get upset because of the dullness of mind exhibited. Then I think about how sad and lonely their lives must be and suddenly I feel pity instead of anger. What’s sadder is that this is the majority of people.

  • Sven

A little dated, but I laughed hysterically when I read the phrase “By the way, Fucking Ear Commute will be playing at Kathedral this Sunday if anyone’s interested.” as noted above.
    High-larious!

Just heard about newmindspace on George’s “The Hour”, (such a great great show) it’s been awfully busy to get into but I’am so glad I bumped into this site.
I really do miss the TTC when I’am in smaller towns but the TTC thinks their so great whereas in many other big cities there’s usually more than four different lines, and you can find them on the web. The only thing I do hate about the TTC is that people feel they can check you out, like literally and they got nothing better to think about.
