Any Excuse To Use This Picture

Bush Jr.jpg
The City of Toronto has decided that “Segways cannot be operated legally on Toronto streets or sidewalks.” They also face limited usability in city parks, and the Ministry of Transport won’t give them license plates, so you can’t take them on most roads. Where does that leave a Segway driver to take his new toy out for a spin? Just about nowhere. Phew. Naturally, Segway of Ontario is unimpressed with the rulings. But, as the Segway riding Gob would say, come on! It’s difficult enough to navigate city sidewalks with speeding grannies on motorized scooters doing their best to play lopsided bumper cars with pedestrians.

Now, if they’d just do something about cyclists…

I wrote about Segways in July on my blog (click my name). In contrast to Antirealist’s reply…I think the city need to concentrate on proper bike lanes, before Segways are even considered as new way of transportation.

I have no problem with cyclists on the road, and I’m in favour of increasing the number of bike lanes. But cyclists riding on the sidewalk, and generally behaving like jerks, are a menace in this city.
    I know, I know, it’s only a minority – so what?

It’s a little too paternalistic for my liking. If Bikes are fine, Segways should be.
    1. It is insane to block anything that is Electric, the gov. should be encouraging any form of transprt that does not use Gas.
    2. A Jerk is a Jerk, There are tons of Hit-and-Runs in TO every year. Cars are far more vicious. Before the prevent Segway’s from being used, they should start ticketing more Drivers and Bicyclists for not following traffic laws.

city streets are designed around cars. the genius behind the segway (remember when it was codenamed IT or Ginger?) was that one actually could design a city around them. which would you prefer?
    jane jacobs would probably approve.

Segways are not evil, we believe that they are innovative and phenomenal technology — but they do not belong on the sidewalk — Put them on the private estates of those than can afford them. Redefining the accepted definition of “pedestrian” for the benefit of a single company is outrageously inappropriate. Please keep the sidewalks safe and do not provide preferential sidewalk access to the wealthy for the sole economic benefit of some Segway.com corporation.
