White? After Labour Day?
Instead of our usual categories like "News" or "City" or "Intellectualism," Torontoist should put up a category entitled "Activism" or "Abbie Hoffmanism" or perhaps even "Doing Stuff That We Hope Is Worthwhile." If we did put up said category, this would fall into it:
Tomorrow is Wear a White Band day. According to MakePovertyHistory.com, that entails...
Wearing the White Band in 2005 is about sending a message that you want to end poverty. And that you are part of a unique worldwide effort in 2005 to do just that. Wear it anyhow, anywhere. Just wear it:
- Around your wrist or arm
- As a hair band
- Around your rear view mirror
- Through the laces in your shoes
- Around the straps of your handbag
- As a lapel ribbon
- On your key ring
- Even on pet collarsOrder white bands for yourself, friends, family, colleagues and your entire network. Wear it and show the world that we can Make Poverty History.
Even on pet collars. So there you go. But be warned this is not another fashionable silicon ribbon campaign: This is a direct call to those in the U.N. Millennium Summit + 5, which will be held in New York from September 14-16. So do the good deed and wear the White Band.
