Smith’s Not So Sfar

feuilles_pascin5.jpgAmazing French graphic novelist Joann Sfar gets the interview treatment tonight at the Lillian H. Smith library, which Torontoist likes to call the Lillian K. Smith library when we’re feeling especially goofy. Sfar is in town to present The Rabbi’s Cat, his new work set in 1930s Algeria, and discuss graphic novels with beguiling owner Peter Birkemoe.
Sfar is one of France’s most prolific graphic novelists, just have to get a bit more of his stuff translated from le French. It should be better than good, which brings it close to great.

Sfar is truly amazing. He’s, like, 33 and has published (whether by collaboration or solo effort) almost 100 books, for all age groups. Les olives noires; it’s the ongoing saga about a young Jewish child travelling through Judea in the time of Jesus. And -shameless plug- Annex bookstore The Beguiling stocks most of his books in both the original French and English translation.
