Baked Goods: Back and…Baked

bakedgood.gifThe name is all kinds of awful, but new kid on the Harbord block, Dessert Trends, is nothing of the sort. In fact, the patisserie and lite bite spot seems to already have a dedicated lunchtime crowd, despite having been open all of two weeks. desserttrends.jpg
To begin with a criticism, we’ll say only that we hate frappé. What is a frappé? It is French for slap. It is an unfortunate dance step that evil ballet teachers force their dancers to practice ad nauseum. And it is a dodgy Montreal club, patronized by people who end every sentence on an up note. It is not a substitute for an iced coffee. Because if you have the ability to make coffee, then surely you have the ability to make iced coffee. As such, forcing a terribly saccharine ‘iced frappé’ conconction onto a weary patron who wants nothing more than a coffee on the rocks is both cruel and manipulative. $4 for a most awful beverage. So skip the frappé.
The rest of Dessert Trends is a complete treat. The place is bright, light and friendly. The croissant sandwiches (duck and tomato, roast turkey, and fontina cheese with portobello mushroom) are delicious and reasonably priced at $3.50. Beyond croissants there are flourless chocolate tarts, exquisite pear and frangipane pies, fruit tarts, cheesecakes, mini-quiche and brioche too. They also sell fresh bread, antipasto and salads. It’s everything we’d hoped the Bickford Cafe, a few blocks to the west, would be. And the Harbord Cafe too, for that matter. It’s a baked good on the edge of baked great. Just don’t order an iced coffee.
dessert trends is at 169 Brunswick Ave. 416.916.8155. Also, they’re hiring.
