Toronto Rejects Apartheid-ish Measures

mthompson.jpgA dire situation dictates dire actions, not overblown reactions. Toronto City Hall, sadly, seems prone to the latter this month.

Councilor Michael Thompson, Ward 37 Scarborough Centre, told reporters on Monday that he would encourage the city to adopt a program in which police could randomly stop and search black men on the streets. Sort of like a War Measures Act - based on skin colour instead of suspicion of criminal behaviour.

Quickly following the off-the-planet remarks, a backlash was heard from black community leaders, fellow councilors, police officers, residents in Thompson's ward, and, obviously, us. Luckily for Mr. Thompson and other members of Toronto's black community, D. Miller and Toronto Police Chief William Blair have ruled out the possibility of implementing this silly idea.

But now that Thompson - who now shares a foot-in-mouth disease with fellow councilor Giorgio Mammoliti - got his time in the media limelight, Torontoist eagerly awaits who's next. Surely our sworn enemy Denzil Minnan-Wong can top this nonsense. Denzil? You're overdue for a stupefying comment anytime now.

Or, if you have some proposals, tell Mr. Miller or Mr. McGuinty yourself.

Miller revealed his true feelings and character when he said that the violence "isn’t Toronto". And it’s not his Toronto. His Toronto consists of islands with no bridges, Nathan Phillips Square, the home of the homeless, and his trendy High Park neighbourhood. He has no empathy with the honest law abiding people who live in areas where they go to bed every night to the sounds of gunshots. David Miller is an ideologue. He has no use for people who do not share his lifestyle or his ideas. Those who live in crime ridden neighbourhoods, many of whom are visible minorities, are good for the mayor to use as a group when he talks about diversity. But as individuals, they really don’t matter.
It is practically impossible for an incumbent mayor (or counsellor for that matter) to lose a municipal election. But if there are enough shot-up babies, toddlers and children. Miller could easily be defeated by practically anyone.
David Miller did not change his position on violent crime in the city.
The only thing that David Miller cares about is David Miller.

Billonlogan, go float a boat. What, did the mayor not shake your hand at the santa parade last year?

2 years ago when Miller came to my door to ask for my vote, he identified a proposed bridge to the Toronto islands as the city’s most corrosive problem. I disagreed and said it's the increase in gun related crime. He disagreed and said it was just a blip and crime is on the way down.
Mayor Miller’s big idea is to round up all the registered guns in the homes of innocent citizens and lock them in a central storage. Last month, this lefty-windbag was telling us the problem was guns being smuggled from the United States where, according to him, gun laws are "insane." Now, he realizes the problem is really Mr. and Mrs. Joe Average registered gun owner — so much for the value of our "sane" gun laws.

It is not a problem to treat innocent gun owners as if they are criminals, but whatever we do, we must not treat innocent black youth as if they might

Let's just hope in the next election, TOians might wake up to the fact it needs a non-ideological mayor who is prepared to think about the unthinkable.

think about the unthinkable. i like that billon.

and this violence, by the way, is partly a result of your precious megacity idea a few years back.
