Streeter: You Know, Marriage

streeter.gifLast night at the Green Room, Torontoist overheard the following issues-based convo:
Green Room Patron A: I don’t understand why people are against same-sex marriage.
Green Room Patron B: I know.
Green Room Patron A: How does a man marrying another man, or woman marrying another woman affect anyone else?
Green Room Patron B: I know!
Green Room Patron A: If people conscientiously choose to marry, and are old enough…and are of free will…there’s no reason.
Green Room Patron B: I know
Green Room Patron A: No reason.

‘Green Room Patron A’ is right, I don’t understand either.

  • hiffy

    Actually, does anyone get it?
My grandfather is adamant that the ‘fags have a secret agenda and want to corrupt us all’, but they can’t all believe that, can they?

  • Fen

Haha, hiffy, my brother says that exact same thing. It’s all about the evil ‘Gay Agenda’. How they want to take over the Earth and turn everyone gay. Yeah… right.

If you don’t understand why ‘some’ people are against it – you obviously haven’t been listening to other people’s opinions.
The bible says it is wrong. Marriage is a sacrament intended to encourage procreation.
Not that I believe that – but you do need to consider other people’s rational for not wanting it. To dismiss it is to be just as closed minded as them.

  • Fen

I get what you’re saying, doggedly, it would be closed-minded to dismiss someone’s religious beliefs on the subject. But, it’s not a question of I or anyone else being open/closed-minded or not. The issue as I see it, is that a segment of our population is having its rights withheld from them.

I think you’re basically right, Fen. Having the right to hold your own religious beliefs is one thing, and it’s a very important thing. But imposing those beliefs upon the entire population through the legal system is quite another. It’s another case of my right to swing my arms around ending at the tip of your nose.

I understand why people are against same-sex marriage, but I haven’t heard an argument that can’t be disputed.
For example, if marriage is an institution to encourage procreation then all women past menopause shouldn’t be able to legally marry…but they can.
