Film Fridays: People Said This Film Couldn't Fly
Two recommendations this week, for moods most varied. If you're feeling all Baraka then you might want to see March of the Penguins, a doc about the persistence of penguins went it comes to breeding in coldest Antartica. Some have even said that it's impossible to watch the birds at work without "feeling a tug of anthropomorphic kinship." And who doesn't love anthropomorphic kinship.
If birds that don't fly aren't your thing you should check out Layer Cake, the heist movie that opened to ho-hum reviews, but actually soars as a stylish piece of caper. Daniel Craig smoulders, and Colm Meaney and George Harris flank him well. What's more, the film is not just a series of deals set to cool music and fancy camera work. It's a genre movie to be sure, but not a simplistic one. And the ending confounds nicely. Plus, Sienna Miller's freckles make their two minutes of screen time seem like a million years.
