Barber: Layton Design Mere Myth!

postandring.jpgIn a neat parallel of the recent outing of Deep Throat, John Barber goes all investigative on us and unearths the actual designer of the city’s bike posts. And rather like the dismay we felt upon learning DT was just a Hooverite FBI cog, and not, say, Elizabeth Taylor, we’re kind of bummed that, despite insider sources to the contrary, Jack L. had no hand in the design of these rather matter of fact city structures. The real designer was a CCM employee, and bike designer. How predictable.
The post is being honored as it nears its twentieth anniversary. And according to the Barber of cette ville, though David Dennis is credited with creating the post, its actual designer was a volunteer cycling committee member and industrial designer named Bill Coffman. They were initially designed to be affixed to parking meters, but evolved to freestanding grandeur. So the circle of this mystery comes to a close, and though Jack Layton didn’t scrawl drunken innovation on a bar napkin lo those twenty years ago, we can still imagine he did.

We would hate TOist to be some sort of love-in, i try to add a counter spin on current issues to engage meaningful discussion, lets agree to disagree and have some fun.
Yes I do own a bike, but I only ride on bike trails in don valley and the waterfront away from vehicular traffic, the main streets are just far too dangerous for cyclists and bike safety instead of more cyclists on the road does’nt make sense.
