Film Fridays: Clara et Moi

Cinéfranco, the fest of films fully French, opens today with Clara et Moi, a crowd-pleaser about love and public transit. In truth, we don't know how much love actually takes place on the metro, so don't hold us to that. But do enjoy. It screens tonight at 7pm.

Another offering that has us curious is L'Americain, a comedy about a young Parisian so convinced that he is genetically American that he decides to beseech the embassy for a passport on the ground of pure passion for America. Sounds exactly like Phil the Alien, except with no talking beaver, Aliens, Graham Greene, or U.S. agents wearing technicolour fur coats.

And in the non-screwball category there's Exiles, a film about two Parisians on a search for their Algerian routes. According to the site, "The veteran filmmaker (Tony Gatlif) weaves together his classic themes of dislocation and marginalization in this fascinating road movie." Dislocation and Marginalization! Hoo! And it won best direction at Cannes. So there you go.
