Sushi Spreads

sushicollage.gifBloor Street, between Spadina and Bathurst, was already the go-to-it stretch for cheap sushi, and free green tea ice cream. But the past few weeks have helped the sashimi strip up the ante even further – two new Japanese restaurants, which brings the tally to an impressive eight restaurants in about as many blocks. They’re all on the cheap to reasonable side to begin with, so TOist has to wonder how low the pricewars will make a Makimono Set go.
sushi1.gifLast week we tried new kid on the block, Mariko, and while it’s a bit cheaper than Sushi on Bloor and NewG, like Apple computers, you pay for the peripherals! No freebie miso soup, and the house salad is pricier than iceberg and ginger should ever be allowed to be. New Generation and Sushi on Bloor don’t charge for the ice cream, but do charge more.
What’s your favourite of the Bloor corridor restaurants? Recommendations heartily encouraged. And on an entirely unrelated note, we’re glad that the other new resto addition to the Bloorpatch is Chippy’s, Queen West’s favourite salt and battery, where they also serve Coke in glass bottles.

Oh yeah, I saw the new Chippy’s and got crazy excited! I’m a fan of New G. myself, but that might be because it’s one of the first restaurants I ate at in Toronto. Unfortunately they’re quite often crowded. My back up is Japan Sushi across the street. Good sushi, a bit pricier than NG, I think.

I can’t believe restos charge for iceberg lettuce – there’s more nutrients in a glass of water. Anywhooo, Sushi on Bloor is pretty good, but I go to my neighborhood Sushi Island on College – yeah, I realize the object of tha game is to id your fave on Bloor, but still, SI is worth a mention for it’s Caterpillar Roll alone.

I have to agree with the Boy Reporter about NG. It was also my first sushi restaurant and I’m definitely loyal to it. New Gen’s staff is always friendly and service is pretty fast.
Their red dragon role is to die for. As is the spider roll. You can’t really go wrong at New Gen – so if you haven’t tried sushi or are unfamiliar with the rolls, give New Gen a try. Your stomach (and wallet) will certainly appreciate it.

Hey, Mariko is awesome! I ordered a sushi combo and did get free soup and a little marinated cucumber salad – that was a few weeks ago. But they have a $14.99 all-you-can-eat deal that kicks the ass of any other place on the strip.

i think i didn’t order enough rolls to qualify for the freebies.

  • rachel

sarah, i love the photo montage. kudos.

Cant agree that Chippy’s is the be all and end all for Fish and Chips, especially when you have to fork out $10 bucks just for fries and two measley battered fish sticks. Coleslaw and tartar are extra. Call me cheap but its fish and chips!

Chippy’s is way too pricey, but you can get the fish w/o the ridiculous amount of chips for about three bucks less. Have yet to try out Harbord fish and chips.

Caz’s Fish and Chips on Davenport has the best Halibut in town and the prices are reasonable too.

I have always been a “Sushi on Bloor” and then “Sushi Time” kinda girl but my UfT friends only go to NewGen now, and I like all their cheap things there.
If you wander up to Leaside where you can go to Fukui Sushi. It’s good because you can call it Fuck-You sushi and the guys there will always give free rolls and deserts if you’re a charming, repeat customer.

  • http://www.rustyrobot.net Dave

Haha, somehow I believe that you have no problems being charming enough for the free rolls, Paige

The best place in the GTA for all you Fish and Chips lovers is Applewood Fish and Chips, every so often when I venture back to the suburbs (Mississauga) to visit the fam, I stop off at the corner of Tomken and Burnhamthorpe. This place has been open for more then 25 years. And their prices are far lower. For $25.00 you can get 4 large pieces of Golden battered Halibut and a large box of fries and coleslaw. Enough to feed a family.

Man, I need to go on a massive fish and chips run… Harbord F and C is pretty close. Maybe I’ll go today. I’ll tell all of you what I think. As for Applewood, uhm, I probably would have a hard time getting there on my rinkydink bike.
