Toronto Life Aquatic?

2005_01_04shark.gifA group of marine scientists in the middle of Utah’s salt desert want to build an aquarium in Toronto. The idea is to link a network of six attractions around the Americas with an Ocean Journey research ship carrying documentary film makers and scientists.
Given the success of the Vancouver and Montreal aquaria, not to mention our world-class zoo, it’s surprising there has never been a serious Canadian bid to build this kind of facility in our city. Ecotourism advocates argue that the era of captive animals has come and gone, and an aquarium is no longer a badge of urban maturity. But since scuba diving tours and whale-watching holidays are – let’s face it – out of reach for the average Joe, Toronto has a tough choice to make: Do we bring the sharks to us instead?

Well said! But what about our glaring lack of a planetarium? Confidential to William Thorsell: There’s still time to revise the ROM plans and keep the McLaughlin! Won’t someone please think of the stoners?
