Torontoist went to see Small Returns at Theatre Passe Muraille last night and was interested to see that you can now buy tickets for TPM online at the brand-spanking-new www.artsboxoffice.ca.
The bigger theatre companies like Mirvish and CanStage have had online ticket ordering for a little while, but it’s nice to see one of the smaller kids get in on the game.
Toronto's theatre community has traditionally had a pretty poor showing on the ol' Internet. It continues to be a damn shame that there is no single website where you can find out about all the theatre going on in the city that purports to the third biggest English-language theatre centre in the world.
The beleaguered Toronto Theatre Alliance used to run a site called www.torontoperforms.ca, but it was badly maintained and recently the domain was stolen. (Though the TTA continues to link to it on their site...)
Last month, the TTA set up a website for T.O. Tix, the kiosk that sells discount day-of tickets in Dundas Square. Alas, it’s pretty lame: According to the site, the only theatre and dance shows on in Toronto in December are Medieval Times Dinner Theatre, Laugh Resort Comedy Club, A Twisted Christmas Carol, and Juliet (and Romeo). Where's an internet-savvy theatre fan supposed to go? (Other than Torontoist, that is.)
But what about the show? The first act of Small Returns -- a surreal my-worst-job-ever tale about debt and Dieppe that closes this weekend -- was decent with some really charismatic performances by Jordan Pettle and Rosemary Dunsmore. Alas, Torontoist can’t tell you how the second act was because Ghandi’s on Queen closes at 10 p.m. and we had a real hankering for some Saag Paneer and Butter Chicken.
