Rap superstar and Wu-Tang Clan co-founder Ol' Dirty Bastard has died over the weekend. Russell Jones, 35, collapsed in a New York studio on Saturday after reportedly complaining of chest pains. The cause of death is still unknown.

Jones was best known as the Ol' Dirty Bastard (or ODB), but had a number of colourful names, like Unique Ason, Joe Bananas, Big Baby Jesus ("I have always been Jesus"), Osiris, and Dirt McGirt. Though ODB made more headlines for his drug abuse, obscenity, nonviolent crime and general erratic behaviour than his musical contributions, he was well-respected by rap critics and fans alike. Dirty began his career by starting the highly influential Wu-Tang Clan, then went on to release the bona fide hip hop classic, Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Versions.
At the time of his death, ODB was near completion on his new album, which would include a version of Elton John's "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart." The yet untitled album was to be his first since being released from prison.

Today would have been the rapper's 36th birthday.
